Time Card Calculator with Lunch

Four punches a day — in, lunch out, lunch in, out — the way most time clocks record them. Or enter the lunch as minutes if that is easier.

California has daily overtimeLabor Code 510. First 8 hours on the 7th consecutive day of a workweek at 1.5x; over 8 hours on that 7th day at 2x. Exceptions apply for alternative workweek schedules. California overtime rules →

What a 40-hour-only calculator would have told you

$96.00 less

A calculator that only knows the federal 40-hour rule would show $1,104.00 for this period. Under California rules the total is $1,200.00.

How lunch punches are counted

The day is two stretches of work: clock-in to lunch out, and lunch in to clock-out. If your employer rounds, each punch is rounded on its own, then the two stretches are added. An overnight shift with a lunch after midnight is handled the same way.

Example: in at 8:07am, out to lunch at 12:01pm, back at 12:38pm, out at 5:08pm. Exact, that is 8.40 hours. Rounded to the nearest quarter hour — 8:00, 12:00, 12:45, 5:15 — it is 8.50.

Is lunch paid?

Under federal rules, a meal break of 30 minutes or more can be unpaid if you are completely relieved of duty. Rest breaks of 5 to 20 minutes are paid time and should not be punched out. Some states set meal and rest break rules of their own.

Time Card Calculator with Lunch: common questions

How do I calculate hours with a lunch break?

Subtract clock-in from lunch out, then lunch in from clock-out, and add the two. 8:00am to 12:00pm is 4 hours and 12:30pm to 5:00pm is 4.5 hours, so the day is 8.5 hours. If you only know how long lunch was, switch Breaks to minutes and enter 30 instead.

What if I forget to punch back in from lunch?

Fill in both lunch punches or leave both empty — the calculator flags a day with only one rather than guessing. If a punch is missing on your real time card, ask your employer to correct it in writing, because that record decides what you are paid for the day.

Does rounding apply to lunch punches?

Yes. When a rounding rule is selected, all four punches are rounded on their own before the two stretches of work are added. Some employers round only the start and end of the day; if yours does, compare both results and ask how your time clock is set up.
